Beyond Digital: Discover the Scent of Estonia

At Tallinn Digital Summit 2026, we wanted to give our guests something to take home beyond the conversations, connections and ideas shared on stage—not just a souvenir, but a lasting impression of Estonia. That’s the story behind your gift: Estonia’s very own signature scents.

Capturing the Essence of Estonia

How can you capture an entire country’s identity in a fragrance? This was the challenge behind an initiative led by the e-Estonia Briefing Centre and the Brand Estonia team. The goal was to create something distinctive and memorable, rooted in the country's character.

We experience places through more than what we see. The smell of a forest after rain, the freshness of a sea breeze or the earthy scent of an autumn landscape can evoke memories long after a journey ends. Scent offered a new way to express Estonia’s identity—one that speaks directly to the senses.

From Music to Fragrance: An Unexpected Creator

To bring the idea to life, the team turned to an unexpected creative talent: Estonian musician and artist Tom-Olaf Urb, better known as Reket. Widely recognised for his music, Urb has also spent years exploring perfumery. His passion for fragrance grew through his travels and a desire to preserve memories of places and experiences in scent.

Creating a fragrance for his home country was a particularly personal challenge. Estonia's landscapes range from dense forests and quiet wetlands to windswept islands and coastal villages, while its four distinct seasons transform familiar places into entirely different worlds.

Rather than trying to capture everything in one fragrance, Urb created two complementary scents, each telling a different part of Estonia's story.

Two Scents, Two Stories

Coast and Sea

Imagine a summer morning on Estonia's coast. The air is crisp and fresh, carrying the scent of the Baltic Sea mingled with juniper and sun-warmed pine needles. Nearby, fishing boats rest in a small harbour, while the wooden walls of an old boathouse hold stories of countless summers.

Coast and Sea is a light, refreshing and invigorating fragrance inspired by the freedom and openness of Estonia's coastal landscapes.

Forest and Bog

Now imagine stepping into an Estonian forest on a quiet autumn afternoon. The ground is soft beneath your feet, and the air carries the earthy scent of moss and fallen leaves, with a faint hint of smoke in the distance. Beyond the trees, an ancient bog stretches towards the horizon, enveloped in stillness.

Forest and Bog is deeper, earthier and subtly smoky, evoking the mysterious beauty of Estonia's wilderness.

Together, the fragrances capture two contrasting yet complementary sides of Estonia: the freshness of its open coastline and the depth of its ancient forests and wetlands.

Where Nature Meets Innovation

The project goes beyond fragrance, bringing together Estonian creativity, sustainable design, and innovative materials.

Estonian company Myceen, which develops sustainable materials from mushroom mycelium and organic waste, helped create small, sculptural scent carriers inspired by Estonia's iconic glacial boulders. These miniature mycelium stones bring a distinctive tactile dimension to the experience, showing how organic materials and contemporary design can create something both beautiful and forward-looking.

This is a fitting expression of Estonia's character: embracing new ideas while drawing inspiration from the natural world.

A Memory to Take Home

Estonia's signature scents are already being shared with international guests and partners at official events through specially crafted candles and fragrance diffusers. The ambition is to bring them to more places around the world — perhaps welcoming visitors at Estonian airports and embassies, or accompanying events that introduce the country to new audiences.

A scent has a unique power to transport us. A single breath can bring back a place, a moment or a feeling, sometimes years after the experience itself.

And that is precisely what we hope this gift will do.
